CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.  The Corps'  new top officer began his first official trip as commandant Tuesday, visiting Marines in North Carolina and telling them he's got big plans to give Marines more time at home, design a new PT uniform and create a "wounded warrior regiment" to help combat veterans.

Commandant Gen. James Conway is on his first trip to the fleet to visit troops after coming into office more than two weeks ago. Flying on a shiny new Gulfstream jet, Conway and his wife, Annette, are making the rounds to introduce themselves to troops and other Corps officials. Marine Corps Times is accompanying Conway on his trip.   Read More

Important priority: Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James T. Conway poses with Marines at the Wounded Warriors Barracks at Camp Lejeune on Wednesday. Conway said he wants to create a "Wounded Warriors Regiment" on each coast. It will be a nontraditional command that will track and assist wounded Marines.

Commandant's focus on Marines
Conway said the first step to dealing with mental health situations is to have alert leadership at all levels. Then the key is to get Marines into counseling or therapy. He did say there are requests to have more funding for counseling aboard military bases.

Most importantly, Conway said, " Marines suffering from combat stress or PTSD need to be taken seriously like any other wounded Marine."
