Ms. Charron: Thank you for contacting us and for the concern you show for our men and women in service.
I am sorry, but I don't have any advice to give on this matter. One thought though, you might want to
develop a "foster" network of people like yourself to take in and advocate for them.

Hi Stephanie, my name is Bill Jankowski, and I was one of the three guys that came up from Southport to welcome home the Marines last Saturday. You mentioned that you could use some books for the Wounded Warrior Barracks. We have been busy here in Southport rounding up as many books as we could in a short time. We are planning a return trip to the Barracks next Wednesday, March 28, 2007. We would like to meet with you, and the NCOIC of the barracks (I cannot remember his name) to discuss other ways to offer our help and assistance. Also, if possible, we would also like to speak to some of Marines, providing they feel up to it. Any assistance you may be able to provide would be greatifuly appreciated. You can contact me at 910-457-1708 should you have any questions. Hope to hear from you soon. Bill Jankowski

If you find property outside Jacksonville's planning jurisdiction, or wish to extend your search beyond the City's jurisdiction, then Onslow County's zoning regulations would apply. Our regulations do not recognize boarding houses or rooming houses as permitted uses, but does allow a "rehabilitation facility" (defined as a facility engaged in the treatment of substance abuse patients and/or restoration of handicapped persons to useful life through education and therapy) in the Residential-5 zoning district, and allows a "family care home" (defined as a nonprofit housing facility licensed by the State that provides room and board, personal care, and rehabilitation services in a family environment for not more than 6 residents with disabilities) in all residential zoning districts, provided it is not within 500 feet of another family care home. For additional information about County zoning regulations, please contact Angie Manning (455-3661 ext. 313).
Depending on how the proposed use is classified, it may also be subject to special standards under the NC State Building Code.

Mrs. Charron, first, thanks for you efforts to support you husband
in these trying times. I have a daughter who is married to a man in Iraq and
is living at Ft. Sill, it is not easy for the soldier or spouse. In
addition, I have a 80% combat rated VA disability from Viet Nam so I do
appreciate what you are doing.
You did not give much for specifics but here are some places to start. I
will assume you want to form a non-profit 501c3, it would be the wisest
move. I have provided you with contact information for your area and links
that can help you in the initial planning, after you done your homework
please feel free to contact me with more detailed questions. Best wishes Tim
The first stop for non-profit research would be to go to the IRS web page
X-MHSC-http://www.irs.gov/charities/content/0,,id=96986,00.html on charities and
it will give you the details on how to apply. You will need an attorney and
an accountant to help put the paperwork together unless you are very good
yourself.
In addition, here is a list of Grant making foundations that I got from
Yahoo.
X-MHSC-http://dir.yahoo.com/Society_and_Culture/Issues_and_Causes/Philanthropy/Orga

tell you which ones might be interested in funding some of your project.
How do you learn to write grant requests?
Each foundation or organization will provide the paperwork you need.
Because of the amount of detail that you need, I would suggest you go to
your local Score and SBDC centers in your area. The services are free. I
have provided some information below that will get you started. I do not
recommend grant-funding mentoring services. The process below will help get
you started.
Next, I recommend you look at the following SBA sites for additional help.
First, you should go to the SBA Web site and check out their list of web
sites http://www.sba.gov/hotlist/search.html the general NC SBA web site is
X-MHSC-http://www.sba.gov/nc/ .
I would suggest you go to http://www.sba.gov/library/pubs.html and you will
find a list of over 200 publications the SBA has to help you in all areas of
business plan development, marketing, finance, etc. A very good resource and
you can download the information. This small business startup kit is
intended to serve as a roadmap for starting a business. It is both
comprehensive and easy to use. It also includes numerous electronic links
for additional information. Use this powerful interactive tool, with many
supporting resources to help you start a successful business.

A very good resource and you can download the information. They even have
information on non-profits.

someone who knows your area. Free counseling is available by appointment

Hello Stephanie. I
received your e-mail about possibly building a home for wounded marines. For property like this, it would be treated
as a business loan and Marine FCU?s
business
services are not yet up and running.
Furthermore, we will not be lending money to assist with the
start up of
a business. You may want to start with
Navy Marine Corps Relief society because they may be able to point you
in the right
direction for federal funding for something like this.
Please let me know if I can be of further
assistance. It sounds like a great idea!

Due to the specifics of your inquiry, we believe the matter
would be best addressed by a lawyer; the staff

Ma'am- Many services are available through
the Veteran's Administration for those Marines and Sailors being discharged
or medically retired due to traumatic injuries. Several state governments
are providing assistance during the transition period as
well. Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society may provide
specific assistance on a case-by-case basis. Locally, I
recommend you contact www.woundedwarriorproject.org or
the head of the local Wounded Warrior barracks, LtCol Maxwell, to discuss the
project, determine the scope of the need, etc. For your information, the
Military Severely Injured Center through military one source can be reached at
888-774-1361, and is another resource. The local rep is L. Mack Wade,
whose number is 910-987-7721, and his email is mack.wade@militaryonesource.com.
The local VA office and Jacksonville/Onslow Project Care in the local community
may wish to work with you on this idea as well. I hope these
resources help you get started and give you enough info to proceed.
You may want to make a request to the Onslow County Board of
Commissioners for funding of your project.
You will need to have a written plan which should detail the function of
your project, the benefits of your project and the annual cost of your
project.
Also, this project sounds like one that might be a United Way funding
type of project and you may wish to contact the local United Way.
Good luck with your admirable project.
